Connecting to your Account

Go to the login URL that was provided with your account information.  To login, use the VPS account number and password provided in your account confirmation email.   Once you have logged in, your options for controlling and managing your VPS account are listed across the top of the portal and the VPS connector will load directly beneath them.
The VPS connector is a Java Applet, which means you will need to have java installed.  Our applet is digitally signed by Thawte; a division of VeriSign, to guarantee a secure connection.  Most users will experience no troubles launching the applet, but if you do, please see our detailed trouble shooting guide.
Once the applet has completely loaded, click “Connect” and your connector will open in a new window.
If you have any trouble loading the applet or connecting to your account, consult the troubleshooting guide, or call support for assistance.

Disconnecting From Your Account

When closing your connector, you will have the option to “Disconnect” or “Terminate” your session.  If you would like to close the connection to your VPS – leaving everything running on the server (this is what you will generally want to do) – select “Disconnect.”  Only select “Terminate” if you wish to completely shut down your MetaTrader and disable trading.

Upload and Installing an EA

Step 1: Getting the files ready.
If your EA is in a zip file containing individual files, unzip them to a folder on your desktop (to make them easy to find) and proceed to Step 2 and upload the files from that folder on your desktop.
Otherwise, if you received an installer file, first install it on your local computer and then upload the installed files to your VPS from your MetaTrader directory.

Step 2: Uploading the files.
Click “Choose File” and an open file dialogue will appear.  Navigate through your files and select one for upload.  Click “OK” and the file name will show up next to the “Choose File” button.
Below the “Choose File” button is a drop down menu listing different file types.  Indicate the type of file being uploaded:

  • “Expert Advisor” files are found in the MetaTrader/experts folder.
  • “Indicators” are found in the MetaTrader/experts/indicators folder
  • “Presets” are found in the MetaTrader/experts/presets folder
  • “Scripts” are found in the MetaTrader/experts/scripts folder
  • “Templates” are found in the MetaTrader/experts/templates folder
  • “Config” files are found in the MetaTrader/experts/ folder
  • “Include” files are found in the MetaTrader/experts/ folder
  • “Libraries” (DLL files) are found in the MetaTrader/experts/ folder
  • “Expert Files” are found in the MetaTrader/experts/files folder
  • “MetaTrader Core Files” are files to be placed in the MetaTrader core folder itself.
  • “Dukascopy Strategies” are strategy files for the Dukascopy platform.

Click “Add” to add this file to the upload list.  You can upload up to five files at a time in this way.
Once you have either selected all your files or selected five files for upload, click “Upload”.  These files will be uploaded to your account according to the type of file you have identified them.

Step 3: Viewing and Editing EAs:
Once complete, login to your account and restart MetaTrader to see your EAs.  To restart MetaTrader go to File->Exit in MetaTrader’s menu.  Then click the button (labeled: “Click Here to Start MetaTrader”) that appears at the upper center of your VPS desktop.
Your EA files should now appear in the navigator.  You can drag them onto charts as needed.  While the specific configuration of each EA will vary, you can just double click the fields to edit the EA data.

Restarting your Account

If anything should ever go wrong with your account, you can always contact support for help, but restarting your VPS account is likely to clear up many problems.
Refreshing your VPS is very similar to rebooting your home computer.  The VPS is shut down, and you session is restarted.  To refresh, click the “Refresh” button located at the top of the VPS portal. Confirm the restart of your account to allow a progress bar to appear on the screen until the restart is complete.  Your MetaTrader is NOT automatically restarted once your VPS is available.  To reconnect, close the success window and reconnect to your VPS by clicking “Continue” in the Applet.

Settings

The Settings menu is accessible through the “Settings” option at the top of the VPS Portal.  From the Settings menu, you may change your password, reinstall your current MetaTrader or install a different MetaTrader.

Changing Your Password
To change your password, first select “Settings” from the menu at the top of the portal.  Then, select “Set Password” from the drop down window.   Enter your current password and the password that you would like to set as your new password.  Enter this new password twice to confirm the change.

Changing Your MetaTrader
To change the MetaTrader version running in your VPS, select “Settings” from the menu at the top of the portal.  Then, select “Change Package” from the drop down window.   The window will expand slightly, offering you a drop down list of the FCMs (MetaTrader Versions) offered to you by your reseller.
Select the package you would like to install, and click the “Click Here to Change Package” button.   A progress bar will appear while your new MetaTrader is installed.  After the process is complete, you will be instructed to connect to your account to start your MetaTrader.

Reinstalling Your MetaTrader
If you are experience crashes, your MetaTrader files may be corrupted.  Try to reinstall your MetaTrader to solve this problem.  First select “Settings” from the menu at the top of the portal.  Then, select “Reformat” from the drop down window.  Click “Submit” to start the reformat process.  A progress bar will replace the submit link, and your account will be reinstalled with your current version of MetaTrader.  When the process is complete, you will need to connect to your VPS to start your MetaTrader.

PLEASE NOTE:
When you install a new (or reinstall an existing) MetaTrader to your account, ALL your prior settings and uploads will be deleted.  You will need to re-upload any files, and login to your trading accounts (or make new demo accounts).

Restarting MetaTrader

For optimal performance, restart MetaTrader regularly.  Additionally, you will need to restart MetaTrader in order to view new EAs, Settings, Templates, etc.  Restarting MetaTrader is easy.
1.    Close MetaTrader by going to “File->Exit” in your MetaTrader.  This is the best way to close Meta Trader.
2.    A large button will appear at the top center of your VPS.  The button is labeled “Click Here to Start MetaTrader.”  Click the button to start MetaTrader.

Getting the Most from Your VPS:

Restart MetaTrader Regularly:
MetaTrader was programmed with the expectation that it would shut down at least once a day (as this is how the ‘average’ windows user uses their computer).  Since MetaTrader is running on a VPS, shutting down your MetaTrader probably does not occur to you – but it still has to be done.  The longer MetaTrader is left running, the more space it takes up in memory and the slower it will run.  You do not need to restart your MetaTrader every day, but you should consider restarting it every few days and certainly every week.
If you do not prefer to restart your MetaTrader during the trading week (and risk missing out on a trade), consider restarting during the weekend when the markets are closed.  Remember:  Whatever trading time you lose to restarting MetaTrader, is much less than the time you’ll lose ifMetaTrader freezes or crashes.

Consider Your Resources:
We recommend 5 or fewer charts running EAs at a time, for optimal performance.  If you wish to run additional charts please consider restarting your MetaTrader slightly more frequently.

What if something goes wrong?

It happens, things go wrong.  We are continually dedicated to providing you with the support you need to solve your problems.  But be aware that there are steps you can take to attempt to solve the problem on your own.

Try “Refreshing” your account.

By simply rebooting your computer at home, you can solve many problems- and it’s the same with your VPS.  This is especially recommended if your account seems frozen.

Try re-uploading or re-applying your Expert Advisor files.

If you use an EA and you are getting crash errors that mention your EA, try re-uploading those EA files.  Sometimes they get corrupted, and replacing the file is usually enough to resolve those errors.  Our VPS will automatically delete and replace your existing files if you upload the file again.

Reset Your Password.

If you are having trouble connecting to your account – especially if you are being told that “Authentication Failed,” use the “Set Password” tool to set your password – you can set it to your existing password, you don’t need to change anything.
